Truckee River Trail

The Truckee River Trail follows the river downstream from Tahoe City toward Olympic Valley, paved the whole way, with the water in sight or earshot for most of it. It’s one of three legs of TCPUD’s 23-mile multi-use network (the West Shore and North Shore trails are the others), and the whole network takes dogs under one rule, quoted from TCPUD: “Keep dogs on a short leash.”

The primary trailhead is 64-Acres Park, just south of the Highway 89/28 “Y” at Granlibakken Road. The lot there is genuinely large, which is rare for Tahoe trailheads, and the park has restrooms and picnic areas. Water fountains appear along the network. The river leg runs flat the whole way — an out-and-back of whatever length, no summit involved.

The pavement is shared. Bikes run under a 15 mph speed limit, Class 1 and 2 e-bikes included, and the short-leash rule exists because of exactly that traffic. Fast passes are routine on summer weekends. Early mornings run dramatically calmer.

In winter TCPUD plows the network on a prioritized schedule once three inches fall, which makes the paved trail the town’s most reliable snow-season dog walk — most dog-legal routes in the basin disappear under snow, and the state-park ski trails ban dogs outright from November through May. On the West Shore leg, reconstruction work has been closing sections with detours through neighborhood streets; TCPUD’s trail page posts current status. River access points along the Truckee leg reach the water, where the current runs strong in early summer.
