Patton Landing Beach

Dogs are allowed on part of this beach, not all of it. The published rule is that pets are permitted only when leashed, only on the eastern portion of the sand, and on the deck of the café. West of that, no dogs. A mutt mitt dispenser sits near the lot.

Three acres of rounded pebble at 5166 North Lake Boulevard, directly east of Sierra Boat Company and about six miles up Highway 28 from Tahoe City. The California Tahoe Conservancy owns the land; Tahoe Waterman holds the concession and runs it year-round, describing the place on its own site as a dog-friendly beach. There’s a café doing coffee, breakfast and lunch, plus rentals of paddleboards, kayaks, canoes and outrigger canoes. The car-top launch for nonmotorized craft is free. That café deck is the one spot on the property where a dog can sit while someone eats.

Parking is the pinch point: twenty-three spaces, one of them accessible, most within 500 feet of the water. Restrooms, picnic tables, benches, barbecues and shade are on site, reached by paved pathways and a short boardwalk down to the beach. Footing is stone rather than sand, which is what the seasonal mobility mats exist to solve.

Two gaps. Neither the beach directory nor Tahoe Waterman marks where the eastern portion begins, so the boundary is whatever the signage on the ground says. And neither mentions water bowls one way or the other.

Against the Tahoe City beaches, this one splits by geography rather than by rule. Lake Tahoe Commons Beach bans dogs outright. Skylandia Park and Lake Forest Beach take leashed dogs across the whole site. Carnelian West Beach, the Conservancy’s other Carnelian Bay parcel, sits about a mile west.
