Commons Beach

Dogs are not allowed on Commons Beach. TCPUD’s page for the park says so in one line: “No dogs are allowed on Commons Beach, except for leashed dogs on the paved multi-use trail.” That exception is narrow. The paved lakefront trail runs along the boulevard side of the property, above the beach, and a leashed dog can pass through on the pavement. The sand, the lawn, the playground, the three picnic areas and the amphitheater are closed to dogs.

The park itself is four acres of downtown waterfront, stepping down from North Lake Boulevard to the water. Six heated bathrooms, running water, a bike repair station, two electric plug-ins, a group BBQ area, and a small amphitheater that seats sixty-five. There’s a historic jail on the grounds. Open daily, 8:00am to 10:00pm. The North Tahoe Fire Protection District can impose fire restrictions on the BBQ without notice.

Parking is the part worth knowing before driving down. There’s a lot on site, and on Thursdays from May through October it’s closed until 2:00pm for the farmers market. Sunday afternoons in summer bring the free concert series, which fills the lawn and the lot together.

For dogs, the useful geography is what’s around it. The paved trail that threads past the park connects north and west into TCPUD’s 23-mile network, and leashed dogs are allowed on all of it, including the run down to 64-Acres Park at the Y. The Tahoe City Dog Park is the off-leash option in town. Skylandia Park, a few minutes east, has woodland trails. And the Cobblestone Center sits directly across the boulevard, where Tahoe Tap Haus runs two dog-friendly patios within sight of a beach the dog can’t set foot on.
