Kaspian Day Use Area

Kaspian sits on the lake side of Highway 89, four miles south of Tahoe City at the base of Blackwood Canyon. The Forest Service lists it as Kaspian Picnic Area, and the day use area shares the name with the campground across the road. Day use only, open year-round, no fee.

The dog rule comes from the managing agency rather than from the site. Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit publishes one basin-wide line: “Your well-behaved, leashed dog is welcome almost anywhere within the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, with the notable exceptions of designated swimming beaches and areas that are restricted for wildlife protection.” Six-foot leash, pick up after them. The unit names the beaches it closes to dogs, and Kaspian is not one of them.

One thing doesn’t resolve cleanly. Kaspian Campground’s reservation notices read “pets are not allowed on the beaches,” and that listing draws no boundary between the campground and the shoreline across the highway. The picnic area’s own Forest Service page says nothing about dogs either way. Where that beach line starts and stops is not published anywhere the agency posts.

Services are thin. No potable water on site at all, for people or dogs. Restrooms close for the winter along with trash service. No campfires of any kind — wood, charcoal, or any other solid fuel — and a propane stove with an on/off valve needs a valid permit. The Forest Service lists the site’s uses as picnicking, scenery viewing, swimming, non-motorized boating, and windsurfing.

LTBMU currently has a bubonic plague alert posted for the area, which is a standing seasonal notice around Tahoe rodent habitat rather than a closure.

Kaspian Campground is directly across Highway 89. Sunnyside Restaurant and Lodge is a couple of miles north toward town, and Blackwood Canyon Road takes off from the highway at the campground entrance.
