Gatekeeper's Museum & Nature Trail

The cabin stands on California State Parks land at the Truckee River outlet, and the state’s dog rule here is narrow. Dogs are allowed only in the “Truckee River Outlet known as ‘Gatekeepers’ within the day-use area along the Lake Tahoe shoreline,” leashed and never unattended. That’s the shoreline strip, covered separately as the Gatekeepers day-use area. Nothing State Parks publishes extends it to the museum lawn or the nature trail, and no map online draws the boundary between them.

The museum publishes no pet policy at all. Not on its visitor pages, not on the nature trail page. Third-party directories say leashed dogs can come inside the cabin; the historical society that runs the place has never put that in writing, so it isn’t stated here as fact.

The Nature Trail runs through the grounds around the building, free, open May 1 through October 31. Self-guided stations cover native plants labeled with their Washoe names, hand-painted forest animals, a walking story book made with Friends of the Tahoe City Library, and a stretch called Black Bear Forest. Walking it costs nothing. The building charges $10 general, $9 senior, free for kids twelve and under and for military.

Parking has a wrinkle. The museum’s own site says “CA State Parks owns the parking lot out front of the museum and charges for day use of the William B Layton park which surrounds the museum,” and points visitors instead to free parking at the Tahoe City Transit Center across the street, or anywhere else in town that’s free. The transit center sits beside 64-Acres Park, the main trailhead for the paved network, where leashed dogs are allowed the full 23 miles.

Museum hours run April 1 through October 31, Wednesday through Sunday, 11am to 4pm. From November 1 the building opens by appointment only, booked at (530) 583-1762. The nature trail closes for the season on October 31.
