Davis Flohr Park

Davis Flohr Park is a one-acre corner lot in NoDa, a few doors off Matheson Avenue. Mecklenburg County owns it and lists it as a Neighborhood park in its own GIS layer. Dogs are allowed. The county’s parks ordinance handles pets by exception rather than by permission: “It shall be unlawful to have pets in the areas of County parks where pets are expressly prohibited.” Nothing the county publishes prohibits them here, and there’s no per-park page to say otherwise.

Leash policy isn’t published for this park. That leaves the county animal ordinance, Sec. 3-71, as the operative rule: physical restraint anywhere off your own property. Water bowls and fountains go unmentioned in anything official. There are no restrooms.

The park was Clemson Avenue Park until November 17, 2020. The county renamed it for Davis Flohr, a NoDa thirteen-year-old who died in 2019, after a year of petitioning by a family friend. A homemade orange sign reading “Live Like Davis” stands in the park, and it’s the first thing that marks this place as different from any other pocket park in the neighborhood.

The rest is small and open, and visible in one glance from the sidewalk: a swing set, newer playground equipment with climbing structures, a stationary adult cardio station, a basketball half-court with a single goal, benches, and a paved path around a patch of field. Shade comes from perimeter trees rather than anything over the play area.

Parking is on-street only. No lot, no gate.

Hours aren’t published anywhere official. OpenStreetMap records the park as sunrise to sunset and a directory listing puts it at 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., neither of which is the county speaking. Sec. 31 of the ordinance points at the posted closing time, and that sign is on site.

Heist Brewery sits about half a mile northwest on North Davidson. Divine Barrel Brewing is under a mile north.
