Allen Hills Park

Allen Hills Park sits off Cheviot Road in Derita, in the county’s North district. Eighteen acres, by Mecklenburg County’s own boundary data, classed as a developed neighborhood park. It has no page on the Park and Recreation site. The address the county’s own records once pointed to now returns a 404, and the department’s park URL for this location is just the site’s homepage.

So the county’s general rules govern. Section 26 of the Parks & Recreation Facilities Ordinance reads: “It shall be unlawful to have pets in the areas of County parks where pets are expressly prohibited.” Everywhere else on the grounds, dogs are allowed. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control supplies the leash half, in writing: dogs in public parks not designated as dog parks must be “on leash and under physical restraint at ALL TIMES.”

One gap sits in the middle of that. Park and Recreation’s posted trail rules say “Pets are not allowed in playgrounds or athletic field areas,” but that document covers greenways, not parks generally, and the county doesn’t publish the sign text for this park. Most of the developed acreage here is playground and ballfield.

What’s on the ground, per the county’s amenity record: a playground with swings, two basketball half courts, two ballfields, a multi-purpose field, picnic area, and restrooms. Half courts, not full ones. The record marks the park as not ADA compliant and lists parking with a count of five.

There is no dog park here. The county’s data marks that field “No,” and no greenway access either, though that last part is changing. The Irwin Creek Greenway extension runs from Statesville Road to Allen Hills Park by way of Nevin Park and Ribbonwalk. County project updates put active construction in Nevin Park, substantial completion in spring 2026 and project completion in mid-2026. Whether the segment has opened is not posted.
